The percentage of "new students" applying to four-year higher education institutions is growing. These students, who are over the age of 25 and often have families and full-time jobs, are asking institutions to provide them with more accommodating, flexible learning opportunities.
To meet the growing demand for less rigid learning processes, institutions are beginning to consider implementing competency-based education (CBE) programs. CBE programs can be a draw for institutions as they allow students to learn at their own pace and focus on demonstrating skills and subject matter mastery, things that are useful to employers.
