How to Overcome Challenges and Move Forward With AI Adoption in Higher Education

All Blog Posts

These days it seems as if every week brings a new AI tool, use case, or prediction that higher education is about to be transformed. Though the pace seems relentless, the potential is real: AI can help institutions streamline operations, improve support services, and reduce staff burnout. In fact, many institutions have already begun to realize these benefits—AI-powered chatbots are answering student questions quickly, predictive analytics are increasing student retention outcomes, automations are freeing staff up for higher impact work. With clear successes emerging, you might expect widespread adoption across the sector. Yet the reality is that many institutions remain hesitant to fully embrace AI.

The benefits of AI—greater personalization, operational efficiency, improved student support—have been widely publicized. So why isn’t higher education moving faster? What challenges still stand in the way, and what needs to happen next to unlock AI’s potential at scale?

1. What Challenges Continue to Surround AI Adoption in Higher Education?

It’s no wonder many institutions remain hesitant about AI use on college campuses. Worries surrounding AI adoption span strategic, ethical, and operational areas. One of the biggest obstacles is uncertainty around use cases. Many institutions still lack a clear, well-defined plan linking AI initiatives to institutional goals. Without that strategic clarity, it’s difficult to prioritize investments or build consensus across departments.

This difficulty is compounded by the fact that AI adoption requires a cultural shift: rethinking workflows, reimagining roles, and preparing staff for a future where formerly manual tasks become automated. Data governance is another persistent concern. Who owns the data? How is it protected? What ethical obligations do institutions have when using AI that depends on student information? These questions don’t have simple answers—but avoiding them isn’t a strategy.

2. Why Is Higher Education Struggling to Address Challenges and Adopt AI?

Despite the clear benefits AI can bring, many institutions find themselves stalled in the face of these challenges. This issue isn’t finding solutions to the challenges; it’s getting everyone in the institution on board.

In many cases, IT teams are ready to experiment with AI tools, while leadership remains cautious. In other cases, faculty may be exploring AI independently but there aren’t any clear institutional policies—which can cause anxiety for those teams responsible for data security.

Even when steps are taken to ensure cross-departmental consensus, higher education’s culture of careful deliberation and shared governance, while vital for thoughtful decision-making, can slow the pace of innovation. In an environment where rapid change is the norm, this slower, more cautious approach can feel like falling behind—creating tension between the need to innovate and the need to proceed responsibly.

3. How Can Higher Education Move Forward With AI Adoption

The answer to successfully adopting AI in higher education isn’t to throw caution aside; it’s to adopt responsibly. In our white paper, AI in Higher Education: A How-To Guide for Responsible Adoption, we interviewed several institutions with successful AI initiatives and created a practical, repeatable framework that any institutions can use.
